Mercedes-Benz Recalls 2014 SL and SLK Models for Air Bag Defect

Mercedes-Benz is recalling 2014 SL and SLK models because the front passenger air bag may not deploy properly, increasing injury risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a safety-critical component (air bag) that may fail to deploy, increasing the risk of injury in a crash, but no injuries or fatalities have been reported in the source text.

Plain-English summary

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC is recalling certain model year 2014 SLK 250, SLK 350, SLK 55 AMG, SL 550, SL 63 AMG, and SL 65 AMG vehicles manufactured between March 19, 2014, and May 5, 2014. The recall addresses an air bag assembly error that may prevent the front passenger air bag from deploying properly.

In the event of a crash requiring deployment, the failure of the front passenger air bag to function correctly increases the risk of injury to the front passenger seat occupant. Owners are advised not to place passengers or other items in the passenger seat until the vehicle has been remedied.

Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag free of charge. An interim letter was distributed on July 17, 2014, and a second letter was mailed in mid-August 2014 when parts became available. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz at 1-800-367-6372 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
