What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (seat belt installation) that increases the risk of injury in a crash, but the source text does not report any specific injuries or fatalities, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. is recalling certain model year 2015 S550 4Matic Coupe, AMG S63 4Matic Coupe, and AMG S65 vehicles manufactured between January 27, 2014, and April 2, 2015. The recall affects 2,580 vehicles in total.
In the affected vehicles, the left-side front seat belts may have been installed on the right side and vice versa. This incorrect installation angle may affect the seat belt locking behavior and render the child seat restraint function for the passenger seat unavailable. Consequently, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) number 208 and 209. If the seat belt is installed improperly, it may not properly restrain the occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seat belt installation and correct it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on October 30, 2015. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
