Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a defect that can interfere with the accelerator pedal, leading to unintended vehicle speeds and an increased risk of a crash, which aligns with the rubric criteria for significant injury or property damage reports.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra vehicles. The recall affects Chevrolet Silverado vehicles manufactured between May 15, 2013, and January 29, 2014, and GMC Sierra vehicles manufactured between September 19, 2013, and February 8, 2014. Only vehicles equipped with both optional accessory all-weather floor mats (option RPO VAV) and optional vinyl flooring (option RPO BG9) are affected.
The defect involves the lack of necessary retention features to properly secure the driver's side floor mat on vehicles with the vinyl flooring option. This could allow the floor mat to shift and interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing it from returning to an idle position. Such interference could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
General Motors will notify owners and reimburse them for the purchase price of the floor mats upon return. Owners will also receive a free insert for their owner's manual instructing them not to use floor mats. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 for Chevrolet or 1-800-462-8782 for GMC. GM's recall number is 14310.
