Suzuki Recalls Grand Vitara and SX4 for Air Bag Sensor Defect
Suzuki is recalling 2006-2011 Grand Vitara and 2007-2011 SX4 vehicles because the front passenger air bag sensor may fail, causing the air bag to deploy regardless of occupant size.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (air bag deployment to a child) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria.
Plain-English summary
Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2006-2011 Grand Vitara and 2007-2011 SX4 vehicles. In these vehicles, the occupant classification system (OCS) sensor mat installed in the front passenger seat may fail over time due to repeated flexing from seat use.
If the sensor mat fails, the front passenger air bag will deploy during a crash regardless of whether the occupant is an adult or a child. This increases the risk of injury to a child seated in the front passenger seat. Vehicles that previously had a countermeasure OCS sensor mat installed under a special coverage campaign by Suzuki distributors in the United States are not affected by this recall.
Suzuki will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger seat cushion assembly, which includes the OCS sensor mat, free of charge. Sufficient quantities of parts are not currently available to fix all affected vehicles. Owners were notified in October 2013 and will receive a second notification when parts are available for repair. The recall began on May 23, 2014. Owners may contact Suzuki at 1-800-934-0934 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
