The defect involves the spare tire carrier lift plate, which is located underneath the rear of the vehicle. During manufacture, the lift plate may not have been sufficiently coated with anti-corrosion materials. In cold climate regions with frequent road salt use, road spray can reach the carrier assembly and corrode the lift plate. This corrosion could cause the plate to break, resulting in the detachment of the spare tire from the vehicle. A detached spare tire could create a road hazard that increases the risk of a vehicle crash.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace the spare tire carrier lift plate as necessary, free of charge. The recall began in February 2013.
