Toyota Recalls 2004-2011 Siennas for Corroded Spare Tire Carrier Cable

What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where a component may separate, increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural vehicle defects.
Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain model year 2004-2011 Sienna vehicles originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The affected vehicles have a spare tire carrier assembly mounted under the vehicle whose attachment cable may corrode due to high concentrations of road salt splashing onto the spare tire carrier.
If the carrier cable is corroded due to road salt, the spare tire may separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. Toyota sent owners an interim notification in August 2014 to advise them of the recall and that dealers would perform an interim remedy to remove the spare tire and relocate it to the luggage compartment, free of charge. Owners are being mailed a second letter as parts become available, and dealers will replace the spare tire carrier assembly with an improved one, free of charge.
The remedy campaign is being performed in phases, with the first phase beginning on July 7, 2015. Owners of 2004-2010 Siennas subject to this recall were previously subject to recall campaign 10V-160 initiated in 2010; those owners are advised that they must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign, as the earlier recall did not remedy the issue. Additionally, owners of model year 1998-2003 Siennas who have not had the remedy performed under safety recall 10V-160 should contact their Toyota dealer to schedule a free repair. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
