Toyota is recalling 2005-2011 Tacoma Pre-Runner and 4x4 vehicles because a rear leaf spring may fracture and puncture the fuel tank, increasing fire risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (leaf spring fracture) that can puncture the fuel tank, creating a significant fire hazard as explicitly stated in the source text.
Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner and 4x4 vehicles manufactured between September 14, 2009, and October 11, 2010. The recall involves approximately 710,711 vehicles.
In the affected vehicles, one of the rear leaf springs may fracture due to stress or corrosion. While driving, a broken leaf spring could move out of position and contact surrounding components, including the fuel tank. This contact may puncture the tank, causing a fuel leak. If the fuel tank leaks fuel, there is an increased risk of a fire.
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will install new rear leaf spring assemblies at no cost. The recall began on January 29, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
