BMW is recalling certain 2005-2008 7-Series vehicles because the transmission may shift to Neutral instead of Park, creating a rollaway risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (transmission shifting to Neutral) that creates a significant risk of rollaway, crash, and injury to pedestrians or bystanders, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 7-Series vehicles, including the 760LI, 745I, 750I, 750LI, 760I, and 745LI models. The affected vehicles were manufactured between August 23, 2004, and July 24, 2008, and are equipped with the Comfort Access option. This recall covers approximately 45,500 vehicles.
The defect involves the electronic connection between the gear shifter and the transmission. If the driver presses the engine Start/Stop button two or three times within a short time interval, the system may shift the transmission to Neutral rather than Park. In Comfort Access mode, the ignition interlock that prevents key removal if the vehicle is not in Park is not engaged, leaving the vehicle vulnerable to rolling away if the driver exits without applying the parking brake.
Unattended rollaway incidents can result in crashes or injuries to pedestrians or bystanders. BMW will notify owners beginning in November 2012, and the corrective remedy became available in March 2013. Owners can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or via email at [email protected] for more information.
