Turtle Top Transit Buses Recalled for Wheelchair Lift Latch Defect

Turtle Top is recalling 2006-2010 transit buses with specific wheelchair lifts because roll stop latches may bend, posing a fall risk to occupants.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria for potential falls from elevated positions.

Plain-English summary

Turtle Top is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 transit buses equipped with Century-2 and/or Vista-2 wheelchair lifts. The affected vehicles include the Terra Transport, Ford Van Terra, and Ford Odyssey models. The recall involves 577 units.

The defect involves the roll stop latches on the outer barrier, which may become bent or misaligned over time with frequent use. If the latches are insufficient, a wheelchair occupant may defeat or ride over the roll stop. If this occurs while the lift platform is in an elevated position, the occupant could fall and sustain injury.

Turtle Top will notify owners, and authorized Braun dealers will perform the repairs free of charge. The recall began on September 13, 2012. Owners may contact Turtle Top at 574-831-4340 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
