MCI Motor Coaches Recalled for Electronic Stability Control Defect
MCI is recalling certain 2003 and 2007-2012 motor coaches because the electronic stability control system may incorrectly apply brakes, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a defect in a safety-critical vehicle system (ESC) that increases the risk of a crash, but the source text does not report any specific injuries, deaths, or NHTSA 'death/serious injury reported' classification, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain model year 2003 and 2007-2012 E and J models, along with D4000, D4005, D4500, D4505, and D4000ISTV motor coaches. These vehicles were manufactured between October 2002 and October 2011 and are equipped with Meritor WABCO Electronic Stability Control (ESC) modules.
Under certain road and driving conditions, vehicle body roll and road inclination may adversely affect the ESC system's slip angle calculation. This could cause the system to perceive an over-steering situation and apply the outer front wheel brake until the vehicle is perceived to be stable. If the driver is slow to react during this intervention, the vehicle may deviate from the intended line of travel, increasing the risk of a crash.
MCI will notify owners and replace the control module free of charge. The safety recall began on January 4, 2012. Owners may contact MCI Customer Service at 1-800-241-2947 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
