Trans Tech Recalls School Buses With Defroster Control Defect
Trans Tech is recalling 192 school buses because HVAC control knobs may fracture, preventing defroster operation and reducing driver visibility.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The defect causes a loss of defroster function, which may decrease driver visibility and potentially result in a crash. This is a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria.
Plain-English summary
Transportation Collaborative Inc. (TCI) is recalling 192 model year 2009 and 2010 Trans Tech school buses. The affected models include the SST 30 PAK, STH4+9, STH4, STH5RL, ST5, ST4, DW4+9139, DW5193FRL, DW5139, DW5+9195, DW5+9159FRL, DW6159FRL, and DW6159. These vehicles were manufactured on Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana chassis between February 2009 and April 15, 2010.
The recall addresses a defect where the HVAC control knobs may fracture and spin on the control shaft. This failure prevents the operator from controlling the defrost system, causing the buses to fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 103 regarding windshield defrosting and defogging systems.
If the defrost system is inoperable when required, it may decrease the driver's visibility, potentially resulting in a crash. TCI will notify owners, and dealers will repair the buses free of charge. The safety recall began on April 29, 2010. Owners may contact TCI at 1-845-988-0419 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
