MCI Coaches Recalled for Wheelchair Lift Door Safety Hazard

MCI is recalling certain D4000, D4500, and D4505 coaches because the wheelchair lift may disengage and break through the storage door while driving.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where a component may break through the vehicle body, posing a risk of injury to persons and damage to other vehicles or property.

Plain-English summary

Motor Coach Industries, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2000-2009 D4000, model year 2001-2010 D4500, and model year 2005-2007 D4505 coaches. These vehicles are equipped with a Ricon wheelchair lift and a cassette-type wheelchair lift compartment door. The recall covers 4,457 units.

The wheelchair lift may become disengaged from a locked position and slide unrestrained on its rollers within the storage structure. This movement could cause the lift to break through the cassette door and extend beyond the outside of the door when the coach is in motion, particularly during left turns. If the coach is in motion, this defect could result in potential injury to persons and/or damage to other vehicles or property.

The safety recall began on March 31, 2010. MCI will provide parts and labor to install a Ricon-designed retrofit kit, which includes a spring-loaded lock mechanism, free of charge to customers. Owners may contact MCI Customer Service at 1-800-241-2947 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
