E-One Recalls 2009 Fire Trucks Due to Exhaust Switch Failure

E-One is recalling 2009 Cyclone II and Typhoon fire trucks because a faulty switch may allow hot exhaust gases to exit, posing a burn or fire risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported, specifically the risk of burns or fire from hot exhaust gases, which aligns with the High severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

E-One, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2009 Emergency One Cyclone II and Typhoon fire trucks equipped with Cummins ISC CM2150 and ISL CM2150 model diesel engines. The recall addresses a defect in the engine control module (ECM) software logic related to a hard-wired, dash-mounted switch.

This switch is designed to allow vehicle operators to inhibit aftertreatment diesel particulate filter regeneration in environments where elevated exhaust temperatures might be unsafe. Due to the software issue, the switch may not function correctly, leading the operator to believe the switch is in "inhibit" mode when it is not. This condition permits hot exhaust gases to exit the vehicle tailpipe, increasing the risk of melting or burning nearby surfaces, persons adjacent to the tailpipe, or causing a fire.

Owners should contact Cummins at 1-800-DIESELS (1-800-343-7357) to arrange for the engine repair free of charge. E-One is working with Cummins to correct the defect. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit safercar.gov for more information.
