Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and The Werner Ladder Company, in conjunction with the Kentucky Ladder Company, are recalling about 400 Space Master sliding attic ladders. The ladders, designated as Model WS2308, feature a simple metal hook used to lock the ladder in the stored position. On some units, this hook/lock was attached upside down, which could prevent the ladder from being properly secured. If the ladder becomes dislodged, it could slide down from the attic and injure someone.
CPSC and Werner are not aware of any injuries involving these ladders. The recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The ladders were marketed under the Werner "Space Master" brand and sold nationwide at major home center department stores from January 1997 through May 1997 for approximately $75.
Consumers should stop using the ladders immediately. To inspect and repair the ladder, consumers should call Werner toll-free at (888) 523-3372 or write to Werner at 93 Werner Road, Greenville, PA 16125.
