OddzOn Products Inc. is recalling approximately 5,000 children's "Starfish" swimming vests manufactured in 1996. The recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) because the vest's buckles can unlatch unexpectedly while in use. This defect could release a child into the water without the aid of the swimming vest, creating a risk of drowning.

The affected vests are inflatable plastic with a blue inner lining and collar, and a yellow and pink body secured by two plastic buckles in the front. The "Starfish" logo and name appear on the front of the vest and on the buckles. The vests are available in sizes A through D and are intended for children between 1 and 8 years old. OddzOn Products has received one report of the buckles unlatching, but no injuries have been reported.

These swimming vests were sold at toy, sporting goods, and gift stores nationwide from May 1996 through March 1997 for about $14. Consumers should take the "Starfish" swimming vests away from children immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund.
