Plain-English summary
Aqua-Leisure Industries Inc. is recalling approximately 98,000 SunSmart baby adjustable sunshade boats. The recall involves blue and white circular vinyl floats intended for children aged 6 months to 18 months, featuring purple crabs and fish designs. The specific units involved can be identified by the lettering "C/S" molded on the valve. Floats purchased after September 2001 are not included in this recall.
The hazard exists because the leg holes in the seat of the float can tear. This defect can cause children to unexpectedly fall into the water and potentially drown. Aqua-Leisure and the CPSC have received 12 reports of the seats tearing and causing children to fall into the water, including four incidents where children became completely submerged before being reached by a caregiver. No injuries have been reported.
The floats were sold nationwide at juvenile products, specialty, and discount department stores, including Target, K-Mart, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Baby Central, from August 2000 through September 2001 for between $10 and $13. Consumers should stop using these recalled floats immediately and contact Aqua-Leisure at (866) 807-3998 between 9 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.aqualeisure.com for a free replacement.
