Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the West Bend Company have announced a repair program for 425,000 West Bend Automatic Bread and Dough Makers. The recall is necessary because the breadmakers can overheat, presenting a fire hazard. West Bend is aware of three recent incidents where a faulty circuit board in the control panel overheated and caught fire. Neither CPSC nor West Bend is aware of any injuries resulting from these incidents.
The program involves all models of West Bend Automatic Bread and Dough Makers manufactured between June 1, 1994, and April 9, 1995. These box-shaped units, which mix, knead, and bake bread, were sold nationwide and in Canada at retailers including Wal-Mart, Target, and Sam's Club. The units are made of white or black metal with matching plastic lids. Consumers can verify if they own an affected unit by checking the five- or six-digit manufacture date stamp on the back of the appliance.
Consumers should stop using the recalled breadmakers immediately. They should call West Bend at (800) 874-4084 between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. central time to arrange for free pickup and repair. Each repaired unit will have its warranty extended for an additional 12 months.
