What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (burn hazard) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the 'High' severity criteria in the rubric.
Plain-English summary
Vernier Software & Technology is recalling approximately 4,200 Vernier Circuit Board 2 units due to a burn hazard. The recalled product is a green-colored circuit board, 10 inches wide by 6.5 inches high, used to teach students about electrical circuits. The boards feature the Vernier name, logo, product name, and order code (VCB2) in the upper right corner. Recalled units were shipped between August 2015 and April 10, 2018, and bear revision mark codes 'VCB2 REV 1 PPRL 2015' or 'VCB2 REV 1A PPRL 2015' printed below pins 35, 30, and 31.
The recall is necessary because two switches on the circuit board can get stuck between positions, causing them to short out and overheat. If the switches overheat, the metal case can become hot, posing a burn hazard. The firm has received 10 reports of circuit board switches overheating, but no injuries have been reported.
The recalled circuit boards were sold online directly to customers by Vernier Software & Technology, as well as by phone, catalog, and dealers, for about $130. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled circuit boards and return them to the firm for a free repair. Vernier is contacting known customers directly, and return instructions are available on the company's website.
