These sensors are used in science classrooms to collect temperature data and connect directly to a computer's USB port. The recall covers sensors with serial numbers ranging from 0104XXXXXXXX through 2004XXXXXXXX.

The recall was initiated because a static discharge to the sensor can cause it to draw too much current from the computer. This can cause the sensor to overheat, potentially reaching temperatures hot enough to cause burns to the skin or damage objects in contact with it. Vernier reported one incident in which a teacher suffered burns to her palm.

The sensors were sold by Vernier Software & Technology and its resellers through catalogs and websites from February 6, 2004, through December 3, 2004, for about $39.
