Consumers can identify the affected units by checking the crib headboard for the model and lot numbers.

The recall addresses a defect where spindles are missing or loose. This creates spaces where a child's head can become caught, presenting an entrapment hazard. CPSC is aware of an incident involving a one-month-old child in Virginia whose head was caught in a 6-inch space created by missing spindles; the child suffered no injuries. The agency also received a notification from the Empire State Consumers Association of Rochester, N.Y., regarding a defective crib in February 1995.

The cribs were sold for approximately $100 between July 1994 and January 1995 exclusively at Kmart stores in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New Jersey, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Tennessee, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Louisiana, Mississippi, Kansas, Wyoming, Utah, South Dakota, Arkansas, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Rhode Island, and Texas. Consumers who own the affected models should stop using the cribs immediately and discard or destroy them.
