Evenflo Recalls Drop-Side Cribs Due to Entrapment and Fall Hazards

Evenflo is recalling approximately 750,000 Jenny Lind drop-side cribs because the drop sides can malfunction, posing risks of entrapment, suffocation, and falls for infants and toddlers.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in a product used by vulnerable infants, with reported injuries including entrapment and falls, meeting the criteria for 'Severe' severity due to significant injury reports and structural failure.

Plain-English summary

Evenflo Inc. is recalling approximately 750,000 Jenny Lind drop-side cribs sold nationwide from January 2000 through November 2007. The affected models include the Jenny Lind Crib and Jenny Lind Convertible Crib in Maple, White, Oak, and Natural finishes, as well as the Jenny Lind Hidden Hardware Crib in similar finishes. The model number is located on a label on the bottom beam of the headboard.

The recall is issued because the cribs' drop sides can malfunction, detach, or otherwise fail, creating a space where an infant or toddler can become wedged or entrapped, potentially leading to strangulation or suffocation. Additionally, a child can fall out of the crib if the drop side detaches, unlocks, or falls off. CPSC and Evenflo have received 31 reports of drop sides malfunctioning or detaching, including one entrapment incident resulting in head bumps and bruises, and nine incidents where children fell out of the crib, with seven sustaining minor injuries.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled drop-side cribs and contact Evenflo to receive a free repair kit that will immobilize the drop side. A repair kit for the mattress support system is also available for specific models manufactured between 2000 and 2004. In the meantime, consumers should find an alternate, safe sleep environment for the child, such as a bassinet, play yard, or toddler bed depending on the child's age.
