Jardine Recalls Drop-Side Cribs Due to Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards

Jardine is recalling approximately 130,000 drop-side cribs because the sides can malfunction, posing risks of entrapment, suffocation, and falls to infants and toddlers.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves significant injury reports, including one hospitalization and a broken collarbone, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating involving significant injury reports.

Plain-English summary

Jardine Enterprise Ltd. is recalling approximately 130,000 drop-side cribs sold in the United States. The recall covers various models, including the Olympia, Capri, Claremont, Madison, Siera, Hampton, and Windsor lines, as well as 3-in-1 and 2-in-1 convertible cribs. These products were sold at Babies "R" Us, Toys "R" Us, Geoffrey Stores, and KidsWorld nationwide from January 2002 through June 2009 for between $150 and $480.

The drop sides on these cribs can malfunction, detach, or otherwise fail, causing part of the side to fall out of position. This creates a space where an infant or toddler can roll and become wedged or entrapped, which can lead to strangulation or suffocation. Additionally, a child can fall out of the crib. CPSC and Jardine have received 47 reports of drop sides detaching or malfunctioning. In one incident, a child was found unconscious after becoming entrapped and was hospitalized. Nine other reports involving entrapments or fallouts resulted in scratches and bruises, including one child who sustained a broken collarbone.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and contact Jardine to receive a free repair kit that will immobilize the drop side. In the meantime, consumers should find an alternate, safe sleep environment for the child, such as a bassinet, play yard, or toddler bed, depending on the child's age. For additional information, consumers can contact Jardine at (800) 295-1980 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, or visit the firm's website at www.jdservice.biz.
