Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Makita U.S.A. Inc. are recalling approximately 130,000 units of the 5-inch Random Orbit Finishing Sander, model B05000. The recall was initiated because the metal fan inside the sander can fracture during use. When this happens, pieces of the broken fan can break through the motor cover, potentially injuring the operator.
Makita has received approximately 10 reports of the fan breaking, which includes two instances where fan pieces struck the operators, resulting in injuries. The affected sanders were sold through various hardware stores, tool dealers, and home centers nationwide from April 1992 through June 1994 for approximately $125.00 each.
This recall applies to Makita Random Orbit Sanders identified with a specific sticker that does not have the letter "N" stamped on the top left side before the serial number. Sanders that were repaired prior to sale have this "N" stamp and are not included in the recall. The model B05001 sander is also not affected. Consumers who own the model B05000 sander without the "N" stamp should return the sander for repair to the nearest Makita Factory or Authorized Service Center.
