Plain-English summary
Mirka USA Inc. is recalling approximately 2,500 electric random orbital sanders sold in the United States. The recall involves 3-inch, 5-inch, and 6-inch Mirka CEROS compact electric random orbital sanders, specifically models CEROS 325, CEROS 550, and CEROS 650. The sanders are yellow and black with "Mirka" on the front, a speed control lever on top, and a vacuum hose connector on the rear. Affected units have specific serial number ranges listed on the white sticker on the back of the sander housing or engraved on the side of the housing.
The sanders can short circuit, posing a fire hazard. Mirka has received two reports of electrical shorting incidents where the sanders sparked and smoked. No injuries or property damage have been reported in connection with these incidents.
The recalled sanders were sold by various distributors and independent retailers nationwide and online at Amazon.com and BeaverTools.com from January 2013 through March 2016 for about $500. Consumers should immediately stop using these recalled sanders, unplug them, and contact Mirka USA at 800-843-3904 or online at www.mirka-usa.com to obtain a free replacement sander.
