Makita Recalls Angle Grinders and Sanders Due to Spindle Breakage Risk
Makita is recalling approximately 7,500 angle grinders and sanders because a broken drive spindle could cause the disc to separate, posing a laceration risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect (drive spindle breakage) that resulted in a reported injury (arm laceration), meeting the criteria for a Severe rating (significant injury reports).
Plain-English summary
Makita U.S.A. Inc. is recalling approximately 7,500 Makita Angle Grinders and Angle Sanders in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The affected products include the Angle Sander (Model 9020L), the seven-inch Angle Grinder (Model 9027L), and the nine-inch Angle Grinder (Model 9029). These tools were sold nationwide at hardware stores, tool dealers, and home centers from November 1994 through November 1995.
The recall is necessary because the drive spindle on these power tools may break during use. If the spindle breaks, the grinder or sanding disc could separate from the tool, potentially injuring consumers or damaging the machines. Makita has received one report of a consumer who injured his arm when the spindle holding the cut-off wheel broke and the wheel separated from the tool.
Consumers who own one of the recalled angle grinders or angle sanders should immediately stop using the tool and return it to the nearest Makita factory or authorized service center for repair. This recall does not apply to sanders and grinders sold since November 1995 that bear a sticker saying "TYPE 2" on the tool and on the box. For more information, consumers can call (800) 4-MAKITA.
