Black & Decker (U.S.) Inc. is recalling approximately 192,000 random orbit sanders with model numbers RO400, RO400G, RO410, RO410K, RO410LW, and FS3000ROS. The affected units have date codes between 200701 and 200929. These sanders are orange and black, with the "Black & Decker" brand printed on the body, the model number on a label, and the date code stamped on the underside where the dust bag is inserted.
The recall is due to a laceration hazard. The black plastic disc, known as the platen, which holds the sandpaper, can fly off or break apart during use. If this happens, the disc or pieces of it can strike the user or nearby individuals. Black & Decker has received 73 reports of incidents involving the platen breaking or falling apart, including 15 reports of injuries from flying pieces, one of which involved a serious facial laceration.
The recalled sanders were sold at home centers, hardware stores, discount stores, and authorized Black & Decker dealers nationwide from January 2007 through July 2009 for about $40. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled sanders and contact Black & Decker toll-free at (866) 220-1767 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.blackanddecker.com, to obtain a free replacement platen.
