Plain-English summary

Black & Decker (U.S.) Inc. is reannouncing a recall of approximately 200,000 GH1000 Grasshog XP String Trimmer/Edgers. The recall was initiated due to increasing injury reports associated with the product's spool, spool cap, and trimmer string coming loose during use, which can become airborne projectiles. Additionally, the trimmers/edgers can overheat, posing a burn hazard to consumers.

The affected units are electric-powered and were sold at major home center and hardware stores nationwide from November 2005 through January 2007 for about $70. The recall includes trimmers with date codes 200546 through 200645 (manufactured between November 14, 2005, and November 6, 2006) and black spool caps. Units with orange spool caps are not included in the recall. The date code is located on the underside of the trimmer/edger's handle.

At the time of the original announcement in July 2007, Black & Decker had received more than 700 incident reports, including 58 injury reports. Since then, the company has received over 100 additional injury reports, including ten that required medical attention for minor injuries such as bruises and lacerations. Consumers should stop using the string trimmers/edgers immediately and contact Black & Decker for a free repair kit.
