The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Melitta North American are urging consumers to check if they own a Melitta Aroma Brew Automatic Drip coffeemaker, model ACM-10S. Approximately 175,000 units sold nationwide in retail stores between April 1993 and January 1994 are affected. These coffeemakers, which were sold for between $30 and $35, feature hinges on the plastic filter holders that may have been damaged during transit or use.
Damaged hinges can cause the filter holder to unexpectedly swing open during the brewing process, spilling hot water or coffee on nearby individuals. The CPSC learned of this issue after receiving a complaint and a unit from Ralph Nader. Subsequently, the commission identified that at least three people had been burned by spilled liquid from these devices.
Consumers should immediately stop using the affected coffeemakers and contact Melitta at 1-888-635-4882. Melitta will provide a free filter holder replacement kit and installation instructions. The replacement kit includes a new filter holder with a stronger hinge pin to ensure the filter remains securely in place. The affected units are white, black, teal, or plum, with "Melitta" printed on the filter holder and "MODEL ACM-10S" engraved on the bottom. Units sold after February 1, 1994, with redesigned hinge pins, are not involved in this recall.
