The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 14,500 Nobility-brand 10-cup Automatic Coffeemakers, Model #151. The recall was issued because a defect in the internal construction may cause corrosion of the metal bracket holding the thermostat against the heating element. If this corrosion occurs, the thermostat falls away, leaving the unit in a constant "On" position. This generates unnecessary heat until it ignites the plastic case, posing a potential fire hazard.

The affected units were sold nationwide under the Nobility name since approximately June 1976 and retailed for about $16.50. The same coffeemakers were also imported and distributed by other unidentified firms under different brand names. All units bear the inscriptions "UL LISTED 4293, MADE IN SINGAPORE, DO NOT IMMERSE IN WATER, and E57635 MODEL 232" on the base plate. Note that Model #151 is printed only on the packaging box, not the unit itself.

Consumers who own a Nobility coffeemaker, Model #151, should stop use immediately and return the unit to the store where purchased for a full refund. Consumers with coffeemakers that are not Nobility but match the physical description should discontinue use and notify the Commission of the brand name and place of purchase by calling the toll-free hotline at 800/638-2772.
