Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and North American Systems, Inc. announced a voluntary recall of 3.1 million Mr. Coffee coffeemakers. These machines were manufactured between July and December 1975 and distributed nationwide. The recall is initiated to modify units that the CPSC staff believes might pose a potential shock and/or fire hazard. The manufacturer emphasized that only a relatively small number of the total machines subject to modification may actually pose a hazard.
Affected machines are identifiable by a letter and a two-digit number etched into the upper right-hand portion of the outside of the back cover plate. Only machines bearing the letters "G", "H", "I", "J", "K", or "L" and the number "75" (for example, "G-75") are affected. Consumers should examine their machines for these specific markings.
If a machine falls into the affected group, consumers are asked to write to P.O. Box 22132, Cleveland, Ohio 44122, providing their name, address, telephone number, and the machine's code number. The company will contact these consumers to inform them where to take their machines for free modification. Pending modification, owners are advised not to leave the machine unattended, to unplug it when not in use, to turn off switches when cycles are complete, and to avoid tampering with the device.
