The recall addresses a potential fire hazard where the product may fail while plugged in and set to any control position, resulting in overheating, smoking, or ignition. The agency is aware of twenty complaints regarding product failure, but no injuries have been reported.
Only machines manufactured between September 21, 1981, and April 1982, are involved. Affected units are date-stamped on the bottom metal plate with 3-digit code numbers starting at 38-1 and ending at 21-2. The first two digits represent the week of the year, and the third digit represents the year. Over 300,000 machines were manufactured, and 147,000 have already been modified.
Consumers should check their machines for the listed date code numbers. If the code falls within the affected range, consumers should unplug and discontinue use of the machine immediately. Those with affected units should contact Sunbeam Products, Inc. at (800) 672-6333 for assistance, as Sunbeam has taken over responses for this recall. Consumers who have already modified their machines should disregard this notice.
