Plain-English summary
Rival Manufacturing Company is voluntarily replacing certain Model 433 three-speed hand-held mixers in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall affects units with date codes 3690 through 5290 and 0191 through 2791, which were distributed nationwide between November 1990 and September 1991. Approximately 600,000 units were sold at discount chains and department stores for $8.00 to $14.00 each.
The internal motor cooling fans in these mixers may break, causing fan pieces to contaminate food prepared with the device. Rival reported 27 incidents of fan blade breakage to the CPSC, several of which involved minor injuries to the mouth or teeth of consumers who ate the contaminated food.
Consumers can identify affected mixers by checking the underside of the housing for the model number and ink-stamped date code. Those with affected units or questions should contact Rival at 1-800-793-0052 to receive a replacement with a newly designed model.
