The Holmes Group is expanding a recall of Rival slow cookers because handles may break, causing hot contents to spill and burn consumers.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect (handle breakage) that has resulted in reported burn injuries, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating (significant injury reports).
Plain-English summary
The Holmes Group is expanding a recall of approximately 2.6 million Rival slow cookers due to a risk of burns. The handles on the base of these units can break, which may cause hot contents to spill onto consumers. The recall includes Rival Crock-Pot slow cookers with model numbers 3040, 3735, 5025, 5070, and 5445. These units were sold from January 1999 through May 2005 at retailers including Wal-Mart, Kmart, and Target for between $15 and $40.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has received 126 reports of handles breaking, including 33 reports of consumers sustaining burn injuries from the hot contents. The recall has been expanded to include all units manufactured before September 2004. Consumers can identify the affected units by checking the date code stamped on the side of one prong of the power plug; codes from 0199 to 3504 are included in this or the previous recall.
Consumers should immediately stop using the product and contact The Holmes Group to receive instructions on obtaining a replacement base. Consumers can visit The Holmes Group's website at www.rivalrecall.com or call (800) 299-1284 for assistance.
