Plain-English summary
Diversified Products Corporation (DP) is voluntarily recalling certain older Leach aluminum frame racquetball racquets in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The recall involves aluminum racquets sold prior to December 31, 1980, and plastic-molded models sold between January 1, 1979, and June 30, 1982. The majority of these racquets were marketed by Leach Industries, Inc., before DP purchased the company in March 1980.
The recall is due to reports that the butt-plate, a plastic plug located at the base of the handle, has pulled out of the racquet handle during a swing on seven occasions. In these instances, the detached racquet struck an opposing player.
Consumers can contact DP at 1-800-633-5730 or consult a local racquetball club for details. DP will refurbish the butt-plate at no charge. For aluminum racquets, owners may choose a $4.00 refund or a new aluminum racquet for $10.00. For plastic-molded models, owners may add a new leather grip and wrist thong for $4.00. Additional information is available from CPSC's toll-free hotline at 1-800-638-CPSC.
