The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall for 4,150 women's sweatshirts sold by Gap Stores, Inc. nationwide between October and December 1977. These items, manufactured by San Francisco Shirt Works, Inc., failed to comply with the Federal Standard for Flammability of Clothing Textiles. The affected Gap-branded sweatshirts are 100% cotton, fleecy side out, with long sleeves, and feature a sewn-in black label at the back of the neck with "GAP" in light gray stitching and a separate "Made in Hong Kong" label. Specific styles include a winter white pullover with a small center pocket and winter white or blue zippered front styles with regular collars and two front pockets.

San Francisco Shirt Works, Inc. is also recalling approximately 22,000 similar sweatshirts sold under its own "San Francisco Tea Party" label to department stores and specialty shops nationwide during October and early November 1977. These items were imported from a Hong Kong manufacturer. The recall is limited to sweatshirts delivered to retailers during and after October 1977; identical items delivered in approximately July 1977 passed the required flammability tests and are not part of the recall.

If exposed to an ignition source such as a cigarette ash, open flame, or spark, these sweatshirts could ignite and burn with a rapid and intense flame. No injuries have been reported to date. Consumers who possess these sweatshirts should stop wearing them immediately and contact San Francisco Shirt Works, Inc. at 1111 - 17th Street, San Francisco, California 94107, or call the CPSC toll-free hotline at (800) 638-2772 for refund procedures. San Francisco Shirt Works has permanently dropped the suspect fabric from its product line.
