Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and San Francisco Shirt Works, Inc. are voluntarily recalling approximately 22,500 ladies' sweatshirts because they fail to comply with the Federal Standard for Flammability of Clothing Textiles. The affected garments are 100% cotton, long-sleeved sweatshirts imported from Hong Kong and sold nationwide by department stores and specialty shops during October and early November 1977. The specific styles involved are 2115, 2116, 2184, and 2185, which feature sewn-in labels reading "SAN FRANCISCO TEA PARTY" and "Made in Hong Kong." These items were available in winter white, pink, yellow, peach, blue, and chamois.
The recall is necessary because the sweatshirts can ignite and burn with a rapid and intense flame if exposed to an ignition source such as a cigarette ash, open flame, or spark. No injuries have been reported to date. The company has identified that only shirts delivered to retailers during and after October 1977 fail the flammability test; identical shirts delivered in July 1977 passed the required standards.
Consumers who purchased these sweatshirts should immediately stop wearing them. To receive a refund of the purchase price, consumers should write to San Francisco Shirt Works, Inc., Attn: Nancy Bush, 1111 17th Street, San Francisco, California 94107, or call the CPSC toll-free hotline at (800) 638-2772 for instructions.
