Relais Chenille Sweaters Recalled for Flammability Hazard
Melcon Design LLC is recalling over 1,900 Relais brand long-haired chenille sweaters because the fabric fails federal flammability standards and poses a burn risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (flammable fabric) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the 'High' severity criteria in the rubric.
Plain-English summary
Melcon Design LLC is recalling over 1,900 long-haired chenille sweaters for women sold under the brand name "RELAIS" in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall involves four styles: crop crew, fitted cardigan, fitted polo, and turtleneck tunic, available in various sizes and colors including black, brown, gray, blue, green, pink, and off-white.
The fabric fails to meet federal mandatory standards for flammability, meaning it may ignite readily and presents a serious risk of burn injuries. Fabrics that do not comply with these standards typically burn faster than newspaper. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury, as CPSC and Melcon Design LLC are not aware of any injuries involving these sweaters.
The sweaters were sold from November 1996 through January 1997 for approximately $80 to $150. They were sold by Nordstrom in West Coast, Texas, Chicago, and Washington metropolitan area stores, as well as by about 100 small retailers nationwide. Consumers should immediately stop wearing these sweaters and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund or credit. For more information, consumers can call Melcon Design LLC at 212-349-9059 or CPSC's toll-free hotline at (800) 638-2772.
