Levi Strauss Recalls Flammable Fleece Garments Due to Burn Risk
Levi Strauss is recalling approximately 57,000 fleece garments, including Levi's and Dockers brands, because the fabric fails federal flammability standards and poses a burn risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (flammable fabric) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the High severity criteria.
Plain-English summary
Levi Strauss & Co. is recalling approximately 57,000 fleece fabric shirts in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall includes over 34,000 Levi's Jeans for Women junior-sized sweatshirts and about 23,000 similar sweatshirts sold under the Dockers Khakis for Women and Dockers Authentics for Men labels. The garments are made from a cotton-polyester blend with a raised fiber surface, often called sherpa.
The fabric fails to meet federal mandatory standards for fabric flammability and may ignite readily, presenting a serious risk of burn injuries. Fabrics that do not comply with the standard typically burn faster than newspaper. CPSC and Levi Strauss & Co. are not aware of any injuries involving these shirts, though one incident of a shirt flaring up when exposed to a flame was reported without resulting in injury. The recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury.
The recalled garments were sold nationwide at retailers such as J.C. Penney, Levi's Only Store, and Levi's Outlet by Designs from August 1995 to February 1997. The Levi's items were sold for about $30, while the Dockers items were sold for about $25 to $35. Consumers should immediately stop wearing these garments and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund.
