Target Recalls Men's Sweatshirts for Flammability Safety Violations

Target is recalling approximately 6,000 Physical Science-brand men's hooded sweatshirts because the fleece lining fails federal flammability standards, posing a burn risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (flammability) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the High severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

Target Corporation is recalling approximately 6,000 Physical Science-brand men's hooded sweatshirts. The recall involves heather-gray, full-zippered hoodies with "P87" embroidered on the left chest, available in sizes small through XXL. The garments feature two sewn-in labels: one reading "PHYS.SCI" and the other detailing the fabric composition (65% cotton, 35% polyester), RN 17730, and "MADE IN CHINA." This recall does not include other "PHYS.SCI" brand garments.

The recall is being conducted because the fleece fabric on the inside of these sweatshirts fails to meet federal mandatory standards for fabric flammability. The material can ignite readily if exposed to flame, which presents a serious risk of burn injuries in violation of the Federal Flammable Fabrics Act. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Target are not aware of any injuries involving these sweatshirts, and the recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injuries.

The sweatshirts were sold at Target stores nationwide from August 2002 through September 2002 for about $25. Consumers should immediately stop wearing these sweatshirts and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund.
