BenQ GV31 portable projectors recalled after battery overheating and burn injury

BenQ GV31 portable projectors can overheat because of their lithium-ion battery. The firm has received three overheating reports, one of which caused burns to a consumer's hands.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: Held at rubric level 3: the lithium-ion fire hazard is real and one burn injury was reported, but three overheating reports with a single hand-burn incident fall short of level 4's significant injury or property-damage threshold.

Plain-English summary

BenQ America Corp. has recalled BenQ-branded portable projectors, model GV31.

The projectors are white and circular, measure about 5.2 by 8 by 7.5 inches, weigh about 3.7 pounds, and run on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. They sit on a gray base and have a built-in speaker, a carrying strap, a lens and control buttons on top, and shipped with a remote control. The brand name and model number are printed on a label on the underside of the gray base.

The lithium-ion battery can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards. The firm has received three reports of the projector overheating, including one incident that resulted in burns on a consumer's hands.

Stop using the projector immediately and contact BenQ for a free battery repair or a replacement projector, including shipping, by registering at the recall page on BenQ's website to receive a prepaid label and package. Do not put the projector in the trash, general recycling, or used-battery recycling boxes — recalled lithium-ion batteries must be disposed of as hazardous waste. Contact your municipal household hazardous waste collection centre first to ask whether it accepts recalled lithium-ion batteries.
