The affected batteries are identified by part numbers 6500760 or 6500761, and the label on the underside of the pack also states "made by SMP." These batteries were sold as primary or spare packs from May 2003 through August 2003 via Gateway's professional and direct distributors and Gateway Country stores nationwide.

Gateway has received four reports of battery packs overheating, which resulted in minor property damage. No injuries have been reported. The company notes that this is not an internal battery cell defect.

Consumers should stop using the recalled batteries immediately and contact Gateway to receive a replacement battery. In the meantime, consumers can continue to use their notebook computers safely by turning the system off, removing the battery pack, and powering the system using the AC adapter and power cord until the replacement battery is received.
