Portable power banks recalled after fires and burn injuries were reported

Plain-English summary

INIU 10,000mAh portable power banks, model BI-B41, are being recalled. The recalled power banks have a black or blue case with the INIU logo and a paw-print LED light on the front. The model and serial number are printed on the back at the bottom. Only power banks with serial numbers 000G21, 000H21, 000I21 and 000L21 are included.

The lithium-ion battery in the recalled power banks can overheat and ignite, posing fire and burn hazards. INIU has received 15 reports of power banks overheating, including 11 reports of fires that resulted in three minor burn injuries and property damage totalling over $380,000.

About 210,000 units were sold online at Amazon.com from August 2021 and April 2022 for about $18. The remedy field in the CPSC record for this recall duplicates text belonging to a different product, so no remedy instructions are given here.

The CPSC advises that recalled lithium-ion batteries and devices must not be placed in the trash, in the general recycling stream such as street-level or curbside bins, or in used battery recycling boxes found at retail and home improvement stores, because they present a greater risk of fire. A municipal household hazardous waste collection centre may accept them; consumers should contact that office beforehand to ask whether it accepts recalled lithium-ion batteries, and if it does not, contact their municipality for further guidance.
