Zinus Recalls Metal Bunk Beds Due to Fall and Injury Hazards

Zinus is recalling about 26,000 metal bunk beds because welds on the upper bunk can fail, causing the bed to collapse and posing fall and injury hazards.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in a bunk bed that poses a risk of fall and injury, with three reported incidents of bumps and bruises. This aligns with the rubric criterion for 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported' or minor injuries, as no serious injuries or fatalities are reported.

Plain-English summary

Zinus Inc. is recalling about 26,000 metal bunk beds, including models OPLBB, RPBB, and NTBB, due to fall and injury hazards. The welds that secure the upper bunk can come apart, causing the upper bunk to collapse. The firm has received 13 reports of the welds coming apart, including three reports of multiple welds failing simultaneously. Three of these incidents resulted in consumers falling to the floor from the upper bunk, causing bumps and bruises.

The recalled beds were sold online at Amazon, Walmart, Wayfair, Overstock, Home Depot, and Zinus.com from December 2016 through January 2020 for between $90 and $240. The OPLBB model is a black twin-over-twin bed with square cross-section posts, the RPBB model is a blue twin-over-twin bed with circular cross-section posts, and the NTBB model is a gray twin-over-full bed with circular cross-section posts. All models have ladders built into both the head and foot of the bed. The model number is printed on a label on the horizontal bar of the guard rail of the upper bunk.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled upper bunk and contact Zinus for instructions on receiving a free repair kit with reinforcement brackets or a full refund.
