Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in a residential heating appliance that has resulted in reported nonfatal injuries from carbon monoxide poisoning, meeting the criteria for 'Severe' severity (significant injury reports).
Plain-English summary
Lochinvar LLC is recalling approximately 34,300 condensing residential boilers, combi boilers, and packaged systems sold in the United States after August 2016. An additional 3,642 units were sold in Canada. The affected units were sold under the Lochinvar, A. O. Smith, and State Proline brand names and have serial numbers ranging from 103475818 through 115078306. The specific model numbers are listed on the CPSC website and can be found on the data plate located on the unit's rating plate.
The recall is due to a defect where the boiler's flue grommet can deteriorate and dislodge during use. This failure allows the boiler to emit carbon monoxide, posing a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Lochinvar has received seven reports of the flue grommet deteriorating, including one report of two nonfatal injuries involving carbon monoxide poisoning and two reports of carbon monoxide emission that did not result in injury.
Consumers with the recalled boilers should immediately contact the installer or a qualified technician to schedule a free repair. While awaiting repair, consumers who continue to use the boilers should ensure they have working carbon monoxide alarms installed outside of sleeping areas and on every level of the home. Consumers can check their serial number at www.waterheaterrecall.com or contact Lochinvar toll-free at 833-232-9706.
