What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The hazard explicitly involves risk of serious injury and death (smoke inhalation, carbon monoxide poisoning, or death), and the failure to alert is a functional defect in a safety-critical device. Although no illnesses have been reported, the stated risk severity and the product's safety-critical nature meet the Severe threshold.

Plain-English summary

Apollo America Inc. is recalling approximately 50,000 model 51000-600 combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The recalled detectors can malfunction and fail to alert consumers of a fire or carbon monoxide leak, posing a risk of smoke inhalation, carbon monoxide poisoning, or death. No injuries have been reported.

The detectors were sold exclusively by Vivint online at www.Vivint.com and through door-to-door and telephone sales from June 2024 through October 2024 for between $50 and $100. The recalled detector is white with the text "Replace by" followed by a date ranging from 2034/June to 2034/October on the front, and "Apollo" and model number 51000-600 on the back.

Vivint is sending a free replacement detector to all known purchasers. Consumers should continue using the recalled detectors until they receive and install the replacement. Upon receipt, consumers should install the replacement detector immediately, mark the original detector as "recalled," remove its batteries, and dispose of the detector in household garbage. Lithium batteries must be disposed of according to local and state regulations at municipal hazardous waste collection centers or battery recycling boxes.
