Plain-English summary
Crown Boiler Company is recalling approximately 2,200 CWD series cast iron hot water boilers that use natural gas or liquid petroleum. The recall involves units manufactured between May 1, 2005, and July 1, 2013, which were sold nationwide through plumbing and heating wholesale distributors for between $4,000 and $6,700. The boilers are red and gray, approximately 37 inches tall, and feature the Crown Boiler logo on the front. Model numbers begin with CWD, and the manufacturing date is located on a white rating label on the upper right side of the boiler.
The recall is being issued because the air pressure switch can fail to shut down the burners if there is a blockage in the vent system. This failure allows the boiler to emit excessive amounts of carbon monoxide, posing a carbon monoxide poisoning hazard to consumers. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.
Consumers with recalled boilers should immediately contact the installer or distributor from whom they purchased the unit, or contact Crown Boiler directly, to schedule a free in-home repair. While awaiting repair, consumers who continue to use the boilers should install a working carbon monoxide alarm outside of sleeping areas in the home. Crown Boiler can be reached toll-free at (855) 688-0776 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, by email at [email protected], or online at www.crownboiler.com.
