What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (concussion and knee injury), but no fatalities or hospitalizations are explicitly stated, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for injury reports without critical outcomes.
Plain-English summary
DICK'S Sporting Goods is recalling approximately 63,000 Field & Stream Life Line, Linesman, and Safety Ropes. These products are used to reduce the risk of falling while climbing. The recalled ropes are black with orange lines and were sold in single or three packs. They feature a carabiner that hooks onto a harness and a black and red label with style numbers HEH01299, HEH01882Z, or HEH01530 printed in the bottom corner.
The recall is due to a hazard where the ropes can fail when used in freezing conditions, posing fall and injury risks. The firm has received one report of a safety rope failing during freezing weather, which resulted in a concussion and knee injury.
The ropes were sold at DICK'S Sporting Goods and Field & Stream stores nationwide and online from June 2017 through March 2020, and at Sportsman's Warehouse stores nationwide from October 2019 through April 2020. Prices ranged between $20 and $80. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ropes and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or store credit.
