Öhlins Recalls Bicycle Forks Sold on Specialized Bicycles Due to Fall and Injury Hazards

Öhlins is recalling about 5,400 front air suspension bicycle forks sold on Specialized bikes because the air cartridge can spring out, posing fall and injury risks.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (bruised shoulder and broken rib), but no fatalities or serious injuries requiring hospitalization are explicitly stated, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products with reported injury.

Plain-English summary

Öhlins Racing AB and Specialized Bicycle Components, Inc. are recalling approximately 5,400 Öhlins RXF36 Air and RXF34 Air front suspension bicycle forks. These forks were sold as original equipment on some Specialized-branded Enduro, Stumpjumper, Fuse, and Levo mountain bicycles, as well as aftermarket accessories, from January 2016 through September 2018. The recalled forks are black with "ÖHLINS" written in gold on the fork lowers and "RXF36" or "RXF34" printed across the fork arch. RXF36 Coil Forks are not included in this recall.

The recall is due to a defect where the air cartridge can abruptly spring out of the stanchion tube. This failure poses fall and injury risks to the rider. The companies have received four reports in the United States of the air cartridge springing out, including one report of a bruised shoulder and a broken rib.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bicycles and contact an authorized Öhlins or Specialized retailer for a free repair of the front fork. For more information, consumers can contact Öhlins at 877-922-3877 or Specialized Bicycle at 800-722-4423.
