What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect where the washing machine top detaches, resulting in reported injuries including a broken jaw and shoulder injury, which meets the criteria for significant injury reports.
Plain-English summary
Samsung Electronics America Inc. is recalling approximately 2.8 million top-load washing machines sold in the United States. The recall involves 34 models with mid-controls or rear-controls that were sold at retailers including Best Buy, The Home Depot, Lowe's, and Sears from March 2011 to November 2016. The washing machines were manufactured in South Korea, China, and Thailand.
The recall is being issued because the washing machine top can unexpectedly detach from the chassis during use, posing a risk of injury from impact. Samsung has received 733 reports of washing machines experiencing excessive vibration or the top detaching. There are nine related reports of injuries, including a broken jaw, an injured shoulder, and other impact or fall-related injuries.
Consumers should contact Samsung immediately to receive a remedy. Options include a free in-home repair with a one-year warranty extension, a rebate toward a new washing machine with free installation, or a full refund for purchases made within 30 days of the recall announcement. Until a Home Label Kit is received and installed, consumers should only use delicate or waterproof cycles to lessen the risk of the top detaching.
