What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall meets the Severe criterion due to reported injuries (40 total, 8 requiring medical attention) and significant property damage (at least 18 fires with extensive damage), combined with widespread fire involvement (approximately 250 fires). While no consumer deaths are explicitly stated, the hazard has manifested in actual harm and substantial damage.

Plain-English summary

Samsung Electronics America Inc. is recalling approximately 1,120,905 slide-in electric ranges due to a fire hazard involving the front-mounted knobs. These knobs can be activated by accidental contact from humans or pets, creating a risk of fire.

Since 2013, Samsung has received over 300 reports of unintentional knob activation by humans or pets. The ranges have been involved in approximately 250 fires, including at least 18 fires that caused extensive property damage. Approximately 40 injuries have been reported, eight of which required medical attention. There have also been reports of seven fires involving pet deaths.

The affected ranges include multiple model numbers sold from May 2013 through August 2024 at retailers including Best Buy, Costco, The Home Depot, Lowe's, and other appliance stores nationwide, as well as online at Samsung.com. Prices ranged from $1,250 to $3,050 depending on the model.

Consumers should contact Samsung toll-free at 833-775-0120 (9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday), email [email protected], or visit samsung.com/us/support/range-knob-kit to request a free set of knob locks or covers compatible with their model. Until knob locks are installed, consumers should keep children and pets away from the knobs, check that knobs are off before leaving home or going to bed, and avoid leaving objects on the range. Consumers with Wi-Fi enabled ranges can enable the "Cooktop On" notification in the Samsung SmartThings app to receive alerts when a cooktop burner is turned on.
